One Room Challenge: Week 1 - The Open Family Room

Hi everyone!  For those that don't know me, my name is Rachel Dunham and I'm an interior designer whose mission is to create beautiful and functional rooms for the everyday person.  As some of you know, I participated in The One Room Challenge for the first time this past Fall, in which I updated our sad powder room.  The One Room Challenge is a bi-annual blogger challenge put on by Calling it Home where designers transform a room over the course of 6 weeks. There are 20 main participants and hundreds of guest participants (like myself) who take on the challenge. And boy does 6 weeks go fast!

This Spring I'm taking the challenge with a client of mine who lives in Somerville with her husband, daughter and soon, their new mini goldendoodle (!)  The timing felt right to feature this project as I just started working with her and she's gung-ho to make changes quickly.  Mainly I'm helping to accessorize and pull the space together as they already have some nice pieces of furniture that they recently purchased.  The first floor is generally used for hanging as a family and eating meals together.  It's an open concept that includes the galley kitchen, dining area and living space all in one.  Their main entry into the home is also on this level and within the open space, so an additional challenge will be carving out a more functional (and pretty!) entryway for the family.

Here are a few before photos of the space:

Pardon the iPhone photos but this gives you a sense of what we're working with. I'll be working on an updated floor plan, adding some additional accent tables, lighting, rugs and accessories.  I'll also be carving out a better solution for the entryway for their jackets, shoes, boots, etc.

I can't wait to share the progress as we roll along!
