Little Explorer Boys Room

I wanted to share a project I've been working on in my own home for quite some time that's FINALLY finished.  My son's big boy room!  When I was pregnant with my daughter, we decided to move my son into the larger guest bedroom that would give him more space to play (actually they both play in here now!)  At first, he stayed in his crib - since he wasn't climbing out, I was not going to mess around there - but eventually we moved him into a twin bed and really finished off the room. This was done on a shoestring budget as we had just had a second child AND I had just started my business.

My son loves the outdoors and is a curious kid so I went with a "Little Explorer" theme for the room (I say theme loosely as there are certainly items in here that aren't 100% on board with it.)  I love using color, especially in kids rooms so I painted the walls a blue green (Flora by Benjamin Moore) and added accent colors of navy blue, black, and cherry red (his favorite color).

Initially I was going to get a basic bed at Ikea, but then I started nosing around on Craigslist to see what I could find.  I came across this antique twin bed and immediately knew it would be perfect.  It was a natural wood color when I bought it, which was fine but not too exciting, so I painted it a glossy black (Black Beauty by Benjamin Moore). I added some outdoorsy themed sheets, a navy blue quilt, and this plaid, wool blanket that I found on eBay for some additional warmth and a pop of color.

The valances and throw pillow were made using this adorable "Happy Camper" fabric from Tonic Living.  I used the Stockholm rug from Ikea to add some stripes (because I can't do a room without stripes). I like that it's a flatwoven, wool rug so it doesn't shed, and, you can even reverse it should you get a massive stain.  A great value at only $199!  The vintage globe was found on eBay and the gorilla figurine is from Jonathan Adler.

The dresser is vintage as well (actually a hand me down that's made it's way through many rooms in our house). I may swap out the hardware or even paint it someday when I have more time...whenever that may be! The vintage ceramic buses were found by his uncle on eBay and the red bubble gum lamp is from Land of Nod (now sadly, discontinued.). The bear photograph is from The Animal Print Shop by Sharon Montrose.

I really wanted to do a fully wallpapered accent wall with vintage maps, but that was more than I could take on with a baby at home (and very little sleep), so I opted for this little map banner that I found on Etsy.  Super cute.  The barn on the kids table can be moved if they want to draw at the table and the little Ikea planters were repurposed as holders for markers and crayons. The chairs are from Land of Nod and the table Wayfair.

It was so much fun to put this room together for my son who is a happy, energetic, little boy.  I think it will grow well with him over the years to come.
